Bridging Academic Rigour with Real-World Practice Our Evidence-Based Approach We don't follow best practices—we aim to create them. Our work is underpinned by a rigorous academic framework and a commitment to advancing the science of neuro-environmental design. Every project is an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the profound link between our environments and our potential. Our founder's formal PhD research serves as the R&D engine for our practice, ensuring every partner benefits from a methodology that is transparent, intellectually honest, and at the forefront of the field. Below, we share a look into our active research projects. Our Living Laboratories The following projects are not just client work; they are active, formal case studies forming the practical component of our PhD. Each one is a living laboratory, designed to test hypotheses and generate data on how specific environmental factors impact human well-being. Current PhD Case Studies: A Look Inside Our Process Case Study 1: The Ahmadiyya Mosque Garden -Live Research: Translating Theology into Neuro-Architecture The Research Question: This study investigates a critical question: How can we systematically translate an organisation's core values and theological principles—like 'Unity' and 'Peace'—into measurable, neuro-restorative design applications that foster community well-being? Our Process in Action: Our work begins with deep stakeholder interviews, site analysis, and a comprehensive review of both theological and scientific literature. This foundational data informs our initial design hypotheses. (Here, you can show photos of the site, survey information, etc.) Conceptual Exploration: Our proposed designs explore the use of biophilia, sacred geometry, and sensory modulation to create a sanctuary of peace. These are not final drawings, but visual explorations of our research-led methodology. (Here, you show your proposed drawings and illustrative images, framing them explicitly as concepts.) Case Study 2:The Global Garden Game Over : From Chelsea to Community: The 'Global Garden Game Over' In partnership with Ashden Climate Change Charity, this project applies neuro-environmental principles to the real-world challenge of social well-being. It involves transforming a conceptual Chelsea Flower Show garden about climate change into a permanent, restorative public space in Grimsby. This study serves as a critical test of 'biophilic placemaking,' aiming to demonstrate how evidence-based green spaces can foster community resilience, reduce stress, and become therapeutic assets. Case Study 2: The Global Garden Game Over Project Applied Research: Biophilic Placemaking for Community Resilience The Design Hypothesis: In partnership with the Ashden Climate Change Charity, this project tests a core hypothesis: that thoughtful, evidence-based green spaces can be therapeutic assets that measurably reduce stress and improve social cohesion in areas of deprivation. From Concept to Community: The initial concepts, developed for the prestigious Chelsea Flower Show, serve as the foundation for a permanent public space. Our current work involves translating these high-level designs into a practical, community-focused implementation plan. (Here, you show the two sophisticated proposed drawings you have.) - About us 2 | THE DESIGN CIC
The story of a lifelong dialogue between nature, neuroscience, and the search for human flourishing. Garden Loci was founded on a simple, powerful belief: our environment is not a passive backdrop, but an active partner in the quality of our lives. Our Roots Aren't in Design—They're in the Earth. "From my earliest childhood, I understood that the world spoke in a language older than words. I found my solace in nature, sharing my troubles with ancient trees and patient, listening animals. Nature wasn't just a place to me; it was a sanctuary where I felt seen and heard. This intuitive, sacred connection to the land—its ability to listen, to hold, and to heal—is the seed from which Garden Loci grew. It is the continuation of a lifelong dialogue with the living world." A Global Quest to Deconstruct Healing. "An intuitive belief demands proof. My journey began with a personal research mission to learn from the world's masters—pioneering landscape architects like Martha Schwartz, poetic minimalists like Fernando Caruncho, and philosophers of space like Alain de Botton. This was a quest to understand the DNA of a healing place. But a theory is meaningless until it touches a life. We applied these principles where they were needed most, creating gardens of dignity for HIV/AIDS patients at Mildmay Hospital, places of peace for hospice residents in Yorkshire, and a sanctuary for the formerly homeless with the Emmaus charity. These projects became the heart of our work—living proof that a well-designed space can be a locus of healing, transforming pain into peace and despair into hope." "The Vision: Landscaping Minds" This short film explores the 30-year obsession behind our methodology—a journey from intuitive connection to the proven science of how our environments shape our minds." "The Method: The Bridge Between the Poetic and the Proven" Our journey pointed to one truth: the link between our environment and our well-being is not just poetic, it's biological. Today, our methodology stands at the intersection of biophilic design, neuroscience, and wellness coaching. It is continuously sharpened by our Founder's PhD research in Neuro-Environmental Design at the University of Sheffield, in collaboration with world-leading neuroscientist Professor Prescott. Furthermore, our work is deeply informed by the pioneering research of the Humanise movement, integrating the findings of experts like psychologist Professor Colin Ellard o n psychological responses to spaces and neuroscientist Cleo Valentine on 'architectural neuroimmunology'. This scientific rigor is grounded in the real-world clinical perspective of our Scientific Advisory Board , which includes two practicing surgeons (MD, PhD) who provide invaluable insight into the Gut-Brain Axis—the direct physiological link between environmental stress and digestive health. 3 This is the meaning behind the name of our process: 'Garden Loci'. We take the ancient wisdom of the 'Garden' and prove it with the rigorous, modern science of the 'Loci', our proprietary diagnostic for analysing the intersection of space, psychology, and performance." Discover Our Methodology William Butterworth:Founder & Principal Neuro-Environmental Designer PhD Candidate, Neuro-Environmental Design, University of Sheffield RHS Flower Shows 5 x Gold and Silver-Gilt Medalist Creator of the proprietary Loci Diagnostic™ and Garden Process™ frameworks Designer of therapeutic gardens for leading healthcare and charitable organisations, including Mildmay Hospital and Emmaus Let's Create Your Locus of Healing. "Our story is the foundation of our process. We invite you to explore how this unique synthesis of passion, proof, and scientific principle can transform your own environment. How It Works The Design Brief The brief is a collaborative effort between designer and client. Designers work closely with clients to understand their needs and aspirations, and to compile a comprehensive wish list. This wish list typically includes detailed descriptions of the client's desired features and finishes, as well as their budget and timeline expectations. Collborate online In addition to compiling a wish list designers also conduct an in-depth assessment of the constraints and opportunities of the client's site. This assessment includes factors such as the size and shape of the site, the existing conditions, and the surrounding context. The goal of this assessment is to identify any potential challenges or opportunities that may impact the design process. Execute Your Design Once you are completely satisfied with the design, our team will meticulously create a layout PDF. This PDF will serve as a comprehensive build package, encompassing all the necessary plans, drawings, and specifications required for a successful construction project. - About Us - B2B | THE DESIGN CIC
The Science and Soul of Space We hold a passionate conviction: the spaces we inhabit are alive with possibility. They can either drain our energy and focus, or they can become powerful catalysts for well-being, creativity, and human flourishing. At the intersection of artful design and rigorous science, we pioneer neuro-environments—places intentionally engineered to heal, inspire, and unlock an organisation's full potential. "The right environment doesn't just support work; it amplifies potential." William Butterworth Start Now A 30-Year Crusade for Transformative Design Our founder, William Butterworth's, work is the culmination of a lifelong fascination with the soul of a garden and a 30-year career driven by a single, unwavering mission: to craft landscapes that can profoundly heal and inspire. This crusade began with a deep, immersive journey to learn from the world's most innovative minds in landscape design and was forged in the real world, cemented by the undeniable impact of co-created design on people’s lives. Pivotal projects, such as a Gold-Medal winning RHS garden designed with a survivor of the Rwandan genocide and a vibrant musical playspace for the children of Kids Company, crystallized his purpose. These experiences affirmed the power of design to uplift and led to the founding of The Design Charity and The Design CIC in 2011, built around the core principle of creating Transformative Healing Environments. The Next Evolution: From Practice to Pioneer This journey of practical application has now evolved into a new chapter of pioneering academic rigor. William is currently pursuing a PhD in Neuro-Environmental Design, which serves as the formal R&D engine for our enterprise. This doctoral work transforms a lifelong passion into a data-driven practice, allowing us to weaponize academic insight and translate cutting-edge findings from neuroscience and environmental psychology into powerful results for our clients. Our approach is further informed by connections with leading institutions like Johns Hopkins University's NeuroArts Initiative and UCL London, ensuring our work is always at the forefront of the field. Our Mission as a Community Interest Company We believe that creating healthier, more productive, and more inspiring environments is a vital social mission. As a CIC, we are committed to reinvesting our resources into research and initiatives that advance the field and deliver a positive impact on the communities and organisations we serve. A Collaborative Force This venture stands on the shoulders of more than a decade of mission-driven work. Its success and impact have only been possible through the dedication and shared vision of a core collaborative team. Their unwavering belief in the power of transformative environments has been instrumental, and the charity's work continues to be a deep source of inspiration and a testament to our shared values.

The Activation Program Through bespoke coaching and courses, we provide the "software" to ensure your new environment is fully utilized, delivering a transformational outcome. Expertise Where Science Meets Soul. For over 30 years, my journey as a 5 x RHS Gold and Silver Gilt Medal-winning designer has been a dialogue with the living world. I've always known that our environment is not a passive backdrop, but a conscious presence that shapes our inner state. But I knew intuition demanded proof. This quest led me to a PhD in Neuro-Environmental Design at the University of Sheffield, a journey to deconstruct the DNA of a healing place. My work now bridges the gap between sacred artistry and rigorous science. It is the culmination of this lifelong passion: a proven methodology to create spaces that don't just look beautiful, but actively make us better.
