Emmaus Charity Garden at RHS Hampton Court Location: RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, London (later relocated to Cambridge) Key Feature: Co-designed and co-built with the Emmaus community, embodying the principle of co-creation. Core Concept: A symbolic garden, 'An Uprising of Kindness', celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Emmaus Charity. Primary Goal: To translate the Emmaus journey of renewal and community into a physical landscape. Key Outcome: Achieved a prestigious RHS Silver-Gilt medal and created a lasting legacy as a permanent sanctuary garden at Emmaus Cambridge. The Brief: The brief was to create a powerful and symbolic show garden for the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, titled 'An Uprising of Kindness'. The garden was commissioned to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Emmaus Charity, born from Abbé Pierre's famous 1954 radio call to the people of Paris: “My friends, come and help…”. The design had to embody the charity's core values of community and renewal, telling a story of hope and transformation. Our Design Solution: Our solution was a process of co-creation. In deep collaboration with Emmaus Cambridge and Cambridge College, the garden was designed and built with the charity's companions—those who have experienced homelessness. This approach turned the design process itself into an act of community-building and empowerment. The garden's layout and planting were designed to be a metaphor for the Emmaus journey, moving from a challenging, fragmented start to a unified, beautiful, and productive whole, reflecting the supportive structure the charity provides. The Outcome: 'An Uprising of Kindness' was a resounding success, earning a prestigious RHS Silver-Gilt medal, but its true legacy extends far beyond the flower show. After Hampton Court, the garden was permanently relocated to the Emmaus base in Cambridge, where it continues to serve the community as a living sanctuary for residents. This lasting impact proves that a well-designed space can be a catalyst for social impact, community pride, and a profound sense of shared achievement, perfectly embodying the spirit of Abbé Pierre's original call to action. Explore the Case Study RHS Hampton Court: An Award-Winning Community Sanctuary In collaboration with the Emmaus charity and with royal patronage, we designed and built this Silver-Gilt medal-winning show garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The project demonstrates the power of co-creation and the social impact of restorative green spaces. Learn more about this Project The Kids Company Playspace: A Sanctuary for the Inner Hero Designed in close collaboration with the children of Kids Company, a remarkable London-based charity for disadvantaged urban youth, this show garden was a testament to the restorative power of play. The entire playscape was built around the triumphant theme of Lewis Carroll's poem 'Frabjous Day,' acting as a physical metaphor for the hero's quest. This was not just a garden, but an imaginative sanctuary engineered to be a safe 'play escape' from daily pressures. Every element, from the musical pathway to the augmented 'instruments,' was designed to foster a sense of joy and empowerment. Through the journey of the garden, children were invited to connect with their own 'inner hero'—discovering their resilience, creativity, and strength. This is well-being, redefined for the unique landscape of childhood, where restoration is found through the magic of imaginative play." Explore this Project Design Studies & Conceptual Work Beyond our built work, we are constantly exploring the future of restorative environments through research, conceptual design, and large-scale proposals. This is a look at our design thinking in action. Conceptual Design for Guys & St Thomas' Hospital A video presentation of our proposed therapeutic landscape for one of London's leading hospitals, demonstrating our process for tackling complex, large-scale healthcare environments. Conceptual Design for Guy's & St Thomas' Hospital This conceptual design for a leading London hospital showcases the future of restorative landscapes. It is a healing garden engineered to be a powerful tool in patient recovery, built on the profound principles of biophilia and embodied cognition. The design creates a rich, multi-sensory journey designed to reduce stress and actively engage the body's natural healing responses. The space is filled with accessible pathways, a curated palette of scented and edible plants, and varied textures that invite touch. Every element is designed to work in concert, creating a cohesive therapeutic environment that leverages the full play of the senses to heighten awareness, elevate mood, and ground patients in the present moment. To validate the restorative impact of the design, the garden integrates discreet bio-sensing technology. This allows for the real-time measurement of the physiological benefits of the environment, providing invaluable data that proves the connection between biophilic design and human well-being. This turns the garden from a passive space into an interactive, evidence-based partner in the healing process. "Global Garden: Game Over" – A Blueprint for a Restorative Future In an age of climate anxiety, we asked a critical question: What is the role of a garden? 'Global Garden: Game Over' is our answer. Developed in partnership with the Ashton Climate Change Charity, this is our proposed entry for the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2027. The design presents a powerful metaphor for our modern condition. The outer world is depicted as a stark, challenging landscape—a reference to the ecological 'game' we are at risk of losing. Visitors must engage in a conscious journey through an interactive, high-tech path, representing the choices we must make to move towards a better future. The destination of this journey is not an escape, but a prototype for a better reality: a protected, biophilic sanctuary. Inside this modern paradise, lush planting and the restorative sound of water create a space engineered for human well-being—a 'Garden Locus' that demonstrates how we can create pockets of restoration and hope. This project also serves as a potential PhD case study in neuro-environmental design. Following the show, our goal is to relocate the garden permanently to East Marsh, Grimsby, transforming a conceptual show garden into a lasting community asset. We are currently inviting a select group of visionary corporate partners to join us in bringing this project to life, offering a unique opportunity to align their brand with a high-profile, mission-driven venture at the world's most prestigious garden show. A Foundation in Horticultural Excellence Our evidence-based methodology is built upon a deep, hands-on foundation of classic horticultural craft and landscape construction. - Our Process Page | THE DESIGN CIC
We don't just design spaces; we engineer high-performance environments for your mind and your assets. Our proprietary process moves beyond aesthetics to deliver measurable improvements in wellbeing and value. It is a clinical, evidence-based system designed to transform your landscapes and interiors from passive backdrops into dynamic catalysts for focus, restoration, and growth. Our Blueprint for High-Performance Environments This journey is built on two core pillars: the Loci Diagnostic to scientifically audit your environment and the Garden Process to systematically cultivate a thriving ecosystem, inside and out. A Universal Philosophy, A Bespoke Application Our core methodology is universal, but its application is precisely tailored. Whether crafting a personal sanctuary or a corporate asset, the goal is the same: to create an environment that actively enhances wellbeing. ( For Your Home: A Personal Sanctuary Our residential framework is designed to transform your entire home environment—your garden, key interior rooms, and the crucial connections between them—into a single, restorative ecosystem. We focus on creating a holistic sanctuary that mitigates the stresses of modern life, enhances personal and familial wellbeing, and provides a deep, sensory connection to nature. The goal is a profound return on your personal investment in health and happiness. For Your Business: A Performance-Enhancing Asset Our B2B framework is engineered to sell a strategic, performance-enhancing asset. We audit and transform both your interior and exterior spaces to deliver a quantifiable ROI: enhancing property value, boosting employee performance, attracting and retaining talent, and achieving key sustainability targets. Our Commercial Process: Engineering a Strategic Asset For our corporate and development partners, our process is a rigorous, data-driven methodology designed to deliver a clear return on investment. Phase 1: The Loci Diagnostic — The Performance Audit Before we can prescribe a solution, we must conduct a clinical diagnosis of your environment's hidden failures and untapped potential. Our proprietary Loci Diagnostic is a scientific audit that quantifies the impact of your property on its users and your bottom line. We define a 'Locus' as the critical intersection of a physical place, a psychological condition, and a performance indicator. Our audit identifies the "neuro-hostile" Loci—in your offices, communal areas, and outdoor spaces—that are draining cognitive resources. The audit is comprised of three modules: Module 1: The Physiological Baseline: We assess foundational factors that impact physical comfort and usability. This includes analysing the Acoustic Environment to mitigate distracting noise, the Microclimate to ensure thermal comfort, and Air Quality, using both technological and biophilic solutions to create a healthier indoor and outdoor atmosphere. Module 2: The Biophilic & Sensorial Environment: We audit for the absence of restorative nature-based cues essential for optimal brain function. This involves assessing the quality of Visual Connection with Nature (both inside and out), the Presence of Water, and the richness of Natural Patterning and sensory stimuli within the building and its surrounding landscape. Module 3: The Psycho-Spatial Architecture: We analyse how the physical layout supports or undermines your goals. We diagnose the balance of Prospect & Refuge (for both open-plan collaboration and quiet, focused work) and audit for the Absence of Awe & Sanctuary—features proven to enhance creativity and foster community. Phase 2: The Garden Process — Engineering Your Thriving Ecosystem Following the diagnosis, the Garden Process provides the implementation framework. While the name is rooted in landscape, the principle is one of cultivation: it is a new operating system for your property, designed to cultivate success. Our implementation is built on three foundational pillars: Pillar I: Environment as a Technology of Consciousness: We re-engineer your spaces to be a superior 'user interface' for the human brain. Using evidence-based principles, we design for "soft fascination" and enclosure to quiet the analytical mind, reduce mental fatigue, and restore focus. Pillar II: The Environment as Sanctuary: Every modern workplace and property requires a psychological sanctuary from cognitive overload. Our primary tool is Advanced Biophilia, a multi-layered strategy applied to interiors and exteriors, grounded in established scientific theories like Attention Restoration Theory (ART) and Stress Recovery Theory (SRT). Pillar III: The Environment as Ecosystem: A healthy ecosystem is resilient, collaborative, and productive. We apply these principles to engineer a high-performance culture, culminating in the Architecture of Awe. By engineering moments of Vastness and Mystery, we can "micro-dose awe," a state scientifically proven to quiet the ego and foster the prosocial behaviour that underpins collaboration. Our Process for Your Home: Creating Your Personal Sanctuary For our residential clients, we adapt the same powerful, science-based principles to the personal scale of your entire home. The language is simpler, but the rigour is identical. The goal is to craft a complete restorative haven that enhances the wellbeing of you and your family. Step 1: The Home Environment Audit We begin by understanding how your current environment—both inside and out—supports or hinders your peace of mind. We walk the spaces with you to identify areas of untapped potential and hidden stress, such as a lack of natural light, disruptive noise, or a poor connection to the garden, to create a clear vision for transformation. Step 2: The Holistic Design Blueprint Using the insights from the audit, we design a seamless, restorative ecosystem that is a perfect fit for your personal needs. We apply the core principles of Sanctuary (creating spaces for quiet retreat), Connection (enhancing your link between home and nature), and Joy (designing moments of beauty and sensory delight) to create an environment that feels like a true extension of your best self. Step 3: Bringing the Sanctuary to Life Our final step is to bring the holistic vision to life. Our "Design, Curate & Plant" model ensures a flawless execution, creating a thriving, beautiful, and deeply personal environment that actively contributes to your mental and physical wellbeing every day. A Grounded, Evidence-Based Approach Credibility is the cornerstone of our work. Our methodology is not a proprietary secret; it is an applied science built upon a foundation of peer-reviewed research in neuroscience, environmental psychology, and architecture. We ensure our process remains at the cutting edge by continually vetting it against leading academic research and evolving industry standards for sustainability and wellbeing, such as BREEAM and WELL. This commitment to evidence-based principles guarantees that our solutions are not only innovative but also robust, reliable, and rooted in scientific fact. Our B2B Approach: A Strategic Overlay For our commercial partners—architects, developers, and corporate leaders—we operate as a specialist sub-consultant. Our framework is not a replacement for your design team, but a strategic overlay of evidence-based intelligence for both interior and landscape architecture. This enhances the value and effectiveness of your work, ensuring your project delivers on the promise of a truly high-performance environment. Ready to Unlock the Potential of Your Environment? Mildmay Hospital Garden Location: London, UK Key Feature: The symbolic 'AIDS ribbon pathway' creating a gentle, flowing journey through the garden. Core Concept: An evidence-based therapeutic landscape designed to offer safety, security, and support. Primary Goal: To provide a restorative haven for patients with complex HIV-related conditions, their families, and staff. Key Design Element: An inclusive, semi-circular raised seating area nestled in lush planting, fostering both quiet reflection and social connection. The Brief: Responding to a direct call from Mildmay’s Director, Dr. Ross White, the brief was to create a true sanctuary garden that would offer its community three fundamental qualities: ‘safety’, ‘security’, and much-needed ‘support’. The space needed to become a therapeutic asset, providing a haven of peace and dignity for patients living with complex HIV-related conditions, as well as for their visiting families and the dedicated staff who care for them. Our Design Solution: Guided by our evidence-based framework, we sought to create a deeply immersive and restorative environment. The design is anchored by the symbolic 'AIDS ribbon pathway,' a gentle, flowing route that guides visitors through the space. This path culminates in an inclusive, semi-circular raised seating area, which is nestled within lush, multi-layered planting. This central hub was designed to be a safe, semi-enclosed space that encourages both quiet contemplation and supportive social connection, embodying the principles of prospect and refuge. The Outcome: The completed garden is a transformative space that has become the heart of the Mildmay community. It provides a tangible source of restoration and peace, directly answering the original brief for a safe and supportive environment. The garden serves as a living testament to the power of evidence-based design, measurably enhancing the well-being of its users and providing a vital, restorative asset for one of London's most important healthcare institutions.
