Project: Greenwich Roof Garden

The Brief: The challenge was to transform a small, wasted, and awkwardly positioned household roof space in Greenwich into a multi-functional family sanctuary. Jammed against a cliff face, the area was underutilized and presented significant design constraints. The primary goal was to optimize this neglected space, creating a restorative, year-round haven for the adults while also providing a dedicated, engaging play area for their child

.

Our Design Solution: We embraced the unique constraints of the site to create a multi-level, sensorial retreat. A bespoke pergola structure provides a sense of enclosure and a framework for climbing plants to create a lush canopy. The design wraps seating around a central fire pit, creating an intimate, communal hub for warmth and connection. We integrated a soothing water feature to mask urban noise and enhance tranquility. For the child, a custom climbing wall was installed against the cliff face, seamlessly blending adventurous play with a Japanese-inspired rock formation, turning a limitation into a unique design feature.

The Outcome: The result is a highly optimized and transformative rooftop sanctuary that successfully meets the dual needs of the family. What was once a wasted space is now the home's most coveted area, providing a year-round restorative escape for the parents and a safe, imaginative play zone for their child. The project is a prime example of how evidence-based design can turn even the most challenging urban spaces into high-value assets that significantly enhance family well-being and quality of life.
